February 27th, 2987, year 6 of the ISC Millvanias journey through space.
It was a glorious evening; everyone dancing to the exquisite arias, the shimmering of the stars in the dancers eyes, but what I found most enjoyable of all was seeing my Captain smile. Captain Eris loved hosting these parties; every year we celebrated the anniversary of the Millvanias first launch on Earth E1 in the year 2981. He spent his entire life designing this ship; it was to be home to millions of people of all kinds, so he wanted it to be absolutely flawless so as to make life more enjoyable for the humans onboard. Only about a year ago did he create me, Commander Regato. Im an android similar to him, but no where near as advanced, but that holds no relevance to this story.
Women loved to dance with the Captain, even though he preferred standing back and observing, he always ended up being dragged onto the ballroom floor to dance, hence why it took so long for him to reach the stage to give his speech. When he finally arrived he tapped the rim of the crystal glass in his hand, the ringing attracting the attention of the thousands present. The dancing ceased as they all fixated their gaze upon the Captain.
Hello, he began. As you know, this is the sixth year of my beautiful ships journey. Six years ago I left my family and friends on Earth E1 to travel through the starry sea. For years I devoted my time and money on the designing and creation of the Millvania, using time that my brother Billy wouldve preferred I used going girl-chasing downtown. A series of chuckles rippled through the crowd, their smiling faces encouraging the Captain to continue.
Six years ago was when I last spoke to my brother, and all this time Ive been dying to know how hes been. Im not sure why I havent just searched the archives to check his condition, so Ive chosen to do so today, and I want all of you to join me. We all watched as he gestured to the large holographic screen behind him. Computer, He said, addressing the ships A.I. Why dont you show us Billy Dysnomias file?
Right away, Captain. The Computers robotic voice was then replaced by faint clicks and beeps as the Computer rapidly searched through the database. Billy Dysnomias file has been located.
On screen, please.
Certainly, Captain.
On the screen appeared all Billys information the database contained. In one corner was a rather outdated photo of the tall, lanky young man. Underneath was his name, age, etcetera, but what was beside Present Condition was what shocked us all.
Current Condition: DECEASED
Computer, what is the condition of Earth E1? The Captain enquired.
The Computer replied in its normal, emotionless tone.
Earth E1 was rendered uninhabitable due to rapid pressure change.
While gasps and murmurs rippled throughout the crowd, the Captain remained silent; his trademark grin still etched into his face. Captain I said, reaching to put my hand on his shoulder. Take over for me, Commander. His grin persisted as he shrugged my hand away and left the ballroom. His stride, usually cool and collected, had a semblance of unease. The crowd looked no better; Earth E1 was their home, their birthplace. Many burst into tears, a small handful fainted, while most just looked confused. People began to pour out of the room and returned to their chambers, leaving the ballroom floor empty and bare. There was no point in staying, so I left, heading for the Bridge. There I found the Captain sitting at the main console, doubled over and in tears. Never have I ever seen him in such a state of emotional agony.
Clenched in his hands was his hat, an old Greek fishermans cap given to him by his brother moments before the Millvanias takeoff. Tears soaked its black material as quiet weeping filled the cool air. I approached him, setting a comforting hand on his trembling shoulder as uninterrupted tears rolled down his paled face. Nothing I could say would make any difference, so I chose to remain silent. Simply being there for him was all I could do.
